Das 8. Buch der Madrigale von Krieg und Liebe hat Monteverdi Ferdinand III. gewidmet. Zur Zeit der Entstehung der Madrigale waren die Habsburger eine Weltmacht.
Ferdinand III. geboren 1608 in Graz, gestorben 1657 in Wien. Erzherzog von Österreich, römisch – deutscher Kaiser, König von Ungarn, Kroatien und Böhmen. Er wird als große stattliche Person, als frommer Mensch und als Förderer der Kunst beschrieben. Er war auch Komponist.

1618, als Ferdinand III. gerade 10 Jahre alt war, begann der 30-jährige Krieg. Ein Religionskrieg – Reformation und Gegenreformation – in den ganz Europa involviert war. Es kämpften die Habsburger mit den Spaniern, den Deutschen und dem Vatikan auf der einen Seite und Frankreich, Holland, Schweden und Dänemark auf der anderen Seite. Als die Franzosen den Schweden zu Hilfe kamen und eine Schlacht in der Nähe von Wien gewannen, willigte Ferdinand gezwungener maßen zum Waffenstillstand 1643 ein. 1648 wurde schließlich der Friede besiegelt.
Die Reformation war aber nicht nur ein Kampf um die kirchliche Erneuerung sondern wird auch als Wendepunkt in Europa gesehen. Die gesellschaftspolitische Entwicklung führte zur Religionsfreiheit und eine Trennung von Staat und Kirche herbei. Damit wurde die moderne Gesellschaft begründet.

Auch ein wirtschaftlicher Umbruch geschah, es entstanden die Bankhäuser, die Familien der Fugger und Medici wurden sehr mächtig, die ländliche Bevölkerung verarmte, was zu großen sozialen Spannungen und zu Bauernkriegen führte. Die Pest wütete.

Die Zeit der Spätrenaissance ist vom Umbruch geprägt. Es findet eine Abkehr von der harmonischen ausgewogenen Komposition aus der Renaissance statt. Es entstehen gezierte, kapriziöse, schwulstige, spannungsgeladene Ausdrucksformen. Allegorische Darstellungen wurden jedoch nur von der informierten Aristokratie verstanden, nur kundige Hörer konnten die Feinheiten verstehen.
Der Manierismus war entstanden.

In dieser Zeit schrieb Monteverdi seine Madrigale. Seine Musik wirkt auf mich in ihrer Vielschichtigkeit faszinierend. Die Klangqualitäten sind außerordentlich überraschend, die raschen Klänge ein Ausdruck von innerer Spannung, Erschütterung und innerer Aufgewühltheit. Wie Monteverdi die Verbindung von Text und Musik löst, um die inneren Seelenzustände auszudrücken, wirkt auf mich sehr experimentell. Der Text ist in unabhängige Abschnitte unterteilt, er schafft Kontraste, von der Raserei zur Ruhe von der Ruhe zur Raserei. Er gewährt in manchen Passagen den Sängern rhythmische Freiheiten, „die ihr Singen dem Tempo des Gefühls und nicht des Taktes entsprechend entwickeln lässt“.

Es gelang ihm, menschliche Affekte in musikalische Figuren zu kleiden. Die unterschiedlichen emotionalen Schwingungen im Beziehungsgeflecht der Liebe werden in vollendetem Zusammenspiel von Text und Musik zum Ausdruck gebracht. Nicht der Erzählstrang an dem sich eine Geschichte wie z.B. in der Oper von Anfang bis zum Ende entwickelt ist hier von Interesse. Vielmehr sind es die unterschiedlichen Emotionslagen die in dramatischer, verschlüsselter, entrückter, geheimnisvoller, mystischer, ambivalenter und überraschender Weise zum Ausdruck gebracht werden.
Das Drama der menschlichen Seele wird in einer vielschichtigen und komplexen Symbiose von Text und Musik behandelt die uns auch heute erstaunen lässt.

In der einer intensiven Auseinandersetzung mit den gewählten Madrigalen und dem Team sehe ich diese Gesänge wie einzelne Räume von Seelen Befindlichkeiten.
Mit dem Einsatz von Kurzvideos, die aus bewegten und am Computer bearbeiteten Fotos von Natur, Architektur, Gesichtern, Strukturen usw. zusammengefügt werden, ist es möglich Stimmungen zu erzeugen, die stark auf das unbewusste Empfinden einwirken. Es können die Bilder fokussiert auf die Glasfaserinstallation projiziert oder damit der gesamten Raum bzw. Teile davon bespielt werden.

Ein Zusammenspiel der agierenden MusikerInnen mit dem Raum und den Lichtverhältnissen (Video) ist der ästhetische Anspruch. Die SängerInnen sind auf der Bühne nicht nur mit ihrer Stimme präsent, sie sind auch ständig sichtbar und strukturieren daher als visuelle Kompositionselemente des Raumes das Gesamtgeschehen. Sie erzählen als Charaktere ja keine Geschichte wie in einer Oper, sondern sie erzählen von differenzierten, oft verschlüsselten emotionalen Innenräumen. Dementsprechend werde ich mit ihnen einfache und klare Bewegungsstrukturen erarbeiten, die immer in Kommunikation einerseits untereinander, und andererseits in Beziehung mit dem Raum, den Klängen, dem Bildgeschehen und dem Text stehen.
Ich beobachte in der Arbeit ganz genau die individuelle Ausdruckskraft der einzelnen Darsteller. So ist es mir wichtig zu sehen, wie z.B. jemand geht, den Kopf bewegt und welche Bewegungsqualitäten in den einzelnen Menschen wohnen. Aus diesen Qualitäten bilden sich die Charaktere die in den Madrigalen kriegerisch, sehnsuchtsvoll, flehend, begehrenswert usw. ihre innere Not, ihre Ambivalenz, ihre Rachsucht, ihre Wut, ihr Verlangen, ihre Liebe der Welt mitteilen.
In der Vielschichtigkeit des Geschehens ist es die Reduktion, die der Spannung, der Erschütterung usw. den Raum gibt. Ich suche also keine illustrativen Gesten die einen bestimmten Gefühlszustand verdeutlichen, sondern es ist das Zusammenspiel von Musik, Bewegung, Bild und Raum in einer abstrakten Weise, die eine bestimmte emotionale Atmosphäre erzeugt.

So kann z.B. die minimale Bewegung eines Armes oder des Kopfes in einem Moment eine besondere Bedeutung erlangen wenn alle anderen Teile ruhig sind.

Aber nicht ständig sind alle Gestaltungselemente gleich wichtig. Das hängt meiner Meinung nach ganz von der Musik ab. Es wird Phasen geben, wo die Musik viel stärker die Aufmerksamkeit beansprucht als die visuellen Gestaltungselemente. Monteverdi dienten die Gegensätze als ausgleichendes Prinzip, dieses lässt sich durch die zusammenspielenden Medien erzielen. Die Sammlung der Madrigale wird getragen von einem Netz unmöglicher Gleichgewichte. Theatralische Elemente zeigen sich und entziehen sich sofort wieder der Wahrnehmung.
Die bewegten und durchaus auch ruhigen Bilder (Video) und die Gestaltung des Raumes dienen dazu, um die Dramatik, Spannung und Unmittelbarkeit der Musik zu unterstreichen, und die Zuschauer zu pulsierenden Teilnehmern werden zu lassen.

Monteverdi dedicated the 8th book of his Madrigals of War and Love to Ferdinand III. At the time the Madrigals were composed, the Habsburg empire was at the height of its power. Ferdinand III was born in 1608 in Graz, and died in 1657 in Vienna. He was Archduke of Austria, Emperor of the Roman-German Empire, and King of Hungary, Croatia, and Bohemia. He has been described as a big, good looking man, pious, and a patron of the arts. He also was a composer.

In 1618, when Ferdinand III was merely 10 years old, the 30 years’ war broke out. This was a religious war – between supporters of the reformation and those of the anti-reformation – and engulfed most of Europe. The Habsburgs fought with the Spanish, the Germans, and the Vatican on the one side, France, Holland, Sweden, and Denmark fought on the other. As French troops joined the Swedes and won a battle near Vienna, Ferdinand was forced to agree to the armistice of 1643. In 1648, a peace treaty was finally signed.
The Reformation was, however, not just a battle for the renewal of the Church, but also constituted a turning point in the history of Europe. The socio-political developments it entailed led, eventually, to freedom of religion and the separation of state and the Church. The foundations for modern society were thus laid.

There also happened an economic transition, which saw the rise of banking houses, the ascendance to power of families like the Medici or the Fugger, but also the impoverishment of the rural population, which lead to social tensions and farmers’ wars. Plague epidemics spread through Europe.

The late Renaissance was marked by change. The harmonious, balanced compositions of the Renaissance disappeared, and capricious, pompous, affected and tense forms of expressions became common. Allegorical depictions could only be understood by an informed aristocracy, and only knowledgeable listeners could grasp the subtleties. Manierism was born.

It was during that time that Monteverdi wrote his Madrigals. His music fascinates me with its multi-layered texture; the quality of the sounds is extraordinarily surprising, the quick notes an expression of inner tension, shock, and inner turmoil. I find Monteverdi’s way of combining text and music – expressing these emotional states – very experimental. The text is organized in independent sections; it creates contrasts by moving from frenzy to calm and from calm to frenzy. In some passages, he allows the singers the rhythmic freedom “to develop the song not according to the meter but to their inner emotional state.”

Monteverdi managed to mould human affect into musical figures. The different emotions inherent in the tangle of love relationships are expressed through an artful interplay of text and music. It is not the story’s order of events from a beginning to an end, like in opera, that is of interest here, but rather the various emotions that are expressed in dramatic, encrypted, mysterious, ambivalent, otherworldly, and surprising ways.
The drama of the human soul is dealt with through a multilayered and complex symbiosis of text and music that surprises us even today.

Through an intense engagement with the selected Madrigals and the team, I see these songs as individual spaces of constitutions of the soul.
Using short videos composed of moving and computer-edited photos of nature, architecture, faces, structures, and so on, it is possible to create moods that have a strong effect on subconscious feelings. These images can be projected onto the fiberglass installation, and thus cover the room completely or partially.

The interplay of the musicians with the space and the light-conditions (video) constitutes the aesthetics of the performance. The singers on the stage are present not merely on account of their voices, but they are also permanently visible and hence structure, as the visual elements of the room, the whole performance. As characters, they do not tell a story as in an opera, but they convey differentiated, often encrypted inner emotional worlds. Accordingly, I will develop with them simple and clear structures of movement, which permanently remain in communication with each other, with the space, the sounds, the imagery, and the text.
In this work, I observe closely the individual forces of expression of each performer. Thus, it is important for me to see how, for instance, somebody walks or moves their head, and which qualities of movement each human has. Out of these qualities, the Madrigal’s characters take shape, as they express their inner pain, their ambivalence, vengeance, wrath, desire, or love to the world in aggressive, longing, pleading, desirable, etc. ways.
In such multi-layered scenes it is reduction that gives space to the tensions, the shocks, and all the other emotional elements. In other words, I do not look for illustrative gestures to express certain emotional states, but it is the interplay of music, movement, image, and space in abstract ways that create a particular emotional atmosphere.

Thus, a slight, momentary movement of an arm or a head, for example, can achieve particular significance if all other parts are quiet.
But not all performative elements are equally important all the time. Rather, this depends entirely on the music. There will be phases where the music will capture the attention more than visual elements. Monteverdi used contrasts as a balancing force, and this principle can also be achieved by the various media in their interplay. The collection of the Madrigals is carried by a web of impossible balances. Theatrical elements expose and immediately remove themselves from the attention of the viewer/listener.
The moving – but also quiet – images of the video and the spatial arrangements will enhance the drama, tension, and immediacy of the music, and transform the audience into active participants.

Luise Kloos, auch als Kuratorin für den österreichischen Beitrag verantwortlich, zeichnet mit Ölfarbe auf Papier nach dem Text “Geschafft” von Heinz Janisch eine etwas andere Schöpfungsgeschichte.

Der Text selbst besteht aus nur wenigen Worten und ist Teil des Bildgeschehens. Sie zeichnet Möglichkeiten des Beginnens, des Entwickelns, des Suchens und schließlich des Findens einer Lösung, sowie das kritische Hinterfragen des eigenen Handelns.
Im spielerischen Umgang auf der Suche nach den unterschiedlichsten Formen zeigt sie sowohl die Schwierigkeiten im als auch die Lust am kreativen Schöpfungsprozess.

A creativity workshop and exhibition in visual arts and interdisciplinary methods for children 9 – 12 years
A project by Luise Kloos, Austrian artist and 23 children participating from all over Malta and Gozo;

The history of a place is always connected with hidden secrets, which are mostly forgotten. In the phase of introduction the children were invited to explore and percept the space of St. James Cavalier Centre for Creativity. The old staircase, chosen for the exhibition, was inspiring to start the work. The children discovered how to move, the best place to be in, to explore from a specific angle and create stories. Hidden secrets are creating in the fantasy monsters, all kind of figures or animals. The children tried to get into the body movement of a monster or animal and they started to experiment with mouth and fingers to create special noises and rhythms.

The children initially expressed their fantasies with sketches in chalk and charcoal on small scale paper. In the next step they painted on large scale paper with natural earth pigments. In the third step the figures were cut out. And finally the children created collages with the left overs of the paper. The variety of the figures and forms in realistic and abstract versions is impressive: monsters, a devil´s heart, ghosts; Batman flower and starshuttle.

Children’s art is not just a question of fantasy in creating forms it is also about personality, concentration, imagination and concept. Children are made aware of composition, elements, lateral space, totality of the image, balance between organic and geometrical shapes and reduction. Their wonderful feeling for colour and space is natural and real. Children understand the contemporary language of art with ease and naturalism.

The working process and results of this particular project could be interpretated as: “Discover the secrets, be in the present, don´t fear the future”. Works are presented in two parts at St. James Cavalier Centre for Creativity:
